劉老師的主要研究領域為非均勻相觸媒，內容包括觸媒之合成、鑑定、及應用。視應用之不同，所合成的觸媒，有金屬觸媒、金屬氧化物觸媒、沸石、及各式分子篩等，這些觸媒在合成後再經表面積及孔徑儀、紅外線分析儀、x-光繞射儀、x-光電子能譜儀、電子顯微鏡等儀器鑑定其表面積、孔徑分佈、酸性、結晶性、表面組成、表面形像等之觸媒性質，所合成之觸媒並應用於污染防治、能源、石化原料合成、汽油煉製等方面。

目前實驗室的研究題目包括:(一) 以非均勻相觸媒進行甲醇羰基化反應以合成醋酸；(二) 碳酸二甲酯的合成； (三) 生質能源；(四) 奈米沸石的合成 。

劉老師曾於民國74-75年間前往法國國家研究院(CNRS)觸媒研究中心(IRC)訪問研究，並多次獲行政院國科會之甲等年度研究獎助。並曾於民國81年擔任國科會化學中心沸石小組召集人，於83年擔任觸媒小組之召集人。
