Dr. Shigeru Sugiyama is currently professor of Department of Applied Chemistry and Associate Dean of College of Engineering.
He also serves as the Director of Center for Frontier Research of Engineering.

The course "Energy & Resources Saving Technology" will cover catalysis and resource recovery engineering:
1. History of catalysts
2. Homogeneous reaction and suspension reaction in liquid phase
3. Fixed-bed and fluid-bed reactors and flow reactor
4. Solid state catalysts (1): acidic and basic catalysts
5. Solid state catalysts (2): composite oxide catalysts and the design of the catalysts
6. Supports: role of the support, interaction between the catalyst and the support, and various supports
7. Catalyst preparation: hydrothermal synthesis, gas-phase preparation and solid-phase preparation
8. Characterization (1): Specific surface area, dispersion, acidity, and basicity
9. Characterization (2): IR, electron microscope, XRD, and X-ray fluorescence spectrometer
