Our lab is focused on developing functional nanomaterials for emerging applications including electronic, photonic, catalytic, and energy-related applications. We are currently working in the topical areas listed below. 1. Carbon nanomaterials synthesis and applications Recently the development of carbon nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene has been leading us to an exciting direction for both fundamental science and commercial applications because of their exceptional properties. Commercial applications of carbon nanomaterials require the availability of homogeneous material with well-defined features (purity, electronic structure, diameter, length, layer number, etc.). The aim of our research is to control the structures of carbon nanomaterials by controlling the synthesis conditions so that we can produce these advanced materials with defined structures.
2. Microplasma technology and applications Microplasmas are a special class of electrical discharges formed in geometries where at least one dimension is less than 1 mm. As a result of their unique scaling, microplasmas operate stably at atmospheric pressure and contain large concentrations of energetic electrons (1-10 eV). These properties are attractive for a range of nanomaterials applications. Currently we are interested in size- and compositionally-controlled metal and alloyed nanoparticle synthesis using microplasma technology.
